Brainstorming

One of the most common uses of mind maps is to facilitate and capture brainstorming. I tend to brainstorm directly into the software, because I think in categories for the most part. For more free-wheeling brainstorming in a group, I would probably track on a whiteboard and come back and categorize in the tool later. This would force me to start to categorize the ideas.
